With the number of bike commuters up by nearly 40 percent since 2003, local governments are starting to get hip to the needs of cyclists. This summer saw a bunch of new laws passed that require motorists to give bikers more space (the magic number is usually three feet).As USAToday reports, Colorado now requires cars to give bikers three feet of space on the road. Recent laws require the same of motorists in Louisiana and New Jersey. And similar laws are being proposed in around 13 other states.It's hard to estimate distances like that on the road and that makes these laws a little tricky to abide by (and enforce). A better solution would be to outfit more streets with actual bike lanes, or these ZEBRA bike bumps. But until that's done, these lane laws make sense, both because they keep drivers thinking about giving bikes room, and because they may even encourage more biking.Image from Flickr user richardmasoner (cc).
