Yesterday was, of course, April Fool's Day. But, all jokes aside, it was also a big day in India: April 1, 2010 was the day the country's Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act came into effect. It guarantees an education to Indian children ages six to 14.
According to UNESCO estimates, India is the 135th country to offer free education to all children within its borders. As reported by the Indian news agency PTI, however, only 13 countries worldwide actually offer a completely free education to their young people. And while no tuition is charged in the other 122 countries, some fees are paid by families that send their kids to school.
