Anyone who has ever heard the melodic tones of Israel Kamakawiwo'ole’s version of "Over the Rainbow" knows how beautiful Hawaiian music can be. The Puna Music Festival will celebrate that proud tradition next month, and the organizers' GOOD Maker challenge will spread the wealth through a $500 grant for a plan to increase awareness of Hawaiian music.
The festival, which is hosted by the Kalani retreat center on Hawaii's big island, is organized around the Hawaiian saying Le`a ka pu`uwai i ke kani ka pila, or "joyous is the heart upon the sound of music." Music is an integral part of Hawaiian culture and heritage, and the festival will feature the best of Hawaiian music for 10 days starting May 19.
But the organizers want love for Hawaiian music to spread far beyond the Kalani grounds—they want every community to share in the celebration. The Puna Music Festival challenge will award $500 for a creative plan to share the joy of Hawaiian music in your community. Whether you want to teach kids to play the ukelele, hold a hula party, or stage a concert, get creative and share your ideas between now and May 9.
Public voting will run from May 9 to May 16. On May 18, festival organizers will choose a winner from the top three vote-getters. Oh, and did we mention the winner will also receive a six-night stay for two in a bamboo eco-cottage at Kalani during the festival? So send in those ideas now.
