On this issue, at least, we're headed in the right direction.
Nate Silver has worked his statistical wizardry (known in technical circles as regression smoothing) to produce this graph of public opinion on same-sex marriage since 1988. The upshot: America is now majority gay friendly. So that's great news.
But it's not entirely surprising. As I've said before, anyone who's a member of Generation X or younger knows firsthand that outright homophobia is increasingly regarded as socially and morally retrograde, even among many young people who are otherwise conservative. Of course, some parts of America are still less tolerant than others, but we're all headed in the right direction.
