How to Make an American Quilt (out of Plastic)

Leave No Plastic Behind seems to have successfully transformed the art of quilting from grandma's favorite pastime to a funky environmental statement. From Treehugger:
The National Plastic Quilt Project started as a call to artists, school children and working people to make a square for a quilt as well as making a commitment to live a plastic-free life during a three month period. This had to include not buying anything packaged in plastic and making a 12" square out of any plastic that was collected. The result would be a collection of these squares which would be made into the quilt and displayed across the U.S.

The Portland-based group, which was formed to increase awareness of environmental damage caused by single-use plastic products, accepted contributions from August until mid-October 2009. Artists from across the country utilized a number of collected plastic products, including straws, different food packages and toilet paper wrapping in order to create unique squares for the final quilt. It may not keep you quite as cozy as grandma's hand-sewn one, but the plastic quilt, with its equal parts raising awareness and creating art, is pretty damn cool nonetheless.
