Now that they have been in place for a few months, we're starting to see some numbers, and they're shockingly impressive.
Transport for London (TfL) says studies show a big increase in bike use along two newly-painted Cycle Superhighways. They compared numbers in October 2010 versus the same month in 2009 and discovered an overall increase of 70% more cyclists for both routes.
To clarify, that means that the number of bikers on the streets pre-superhighways was 70 percent lower than it is now that the superhighways have been installed. That's some effective bike promotion, if I've ever seen it (Streetsblog notes that this also coincides with the launch of London's bikeshare program). Will other cities see this information and start doing more for bike lane planning than simply laying them on the side of the street?
