In honor of National Volunteer Week, GOOD will be bringing you a daily recommendation about organizations with which you can volunteer in your neighborhood and around the country.The feeling of building someone a new house, a bright, shiny new place to live, is really beyond compare. Sure, it might be a little clichéd, but the reason everyone does Habitat for Humanity is that it offers a great chance to make a marked and long-lasting impact in other peoples' lives, and there are opportunities available nationwide and around the world. Plus, you'll learn a valuable skill or two working on a construction site. Habitat is not necessarily something you can pop in and do on a weekend, though there are opportunities in some areas for individuals to place themselves on a standby list where they can be called to work on a site for just a day, but it's a great thing to plan a trip around.The Gulf Coast, of course, is where much of the attention on Habitat is currently focused. Again, perhaps its cliched, but if you're thinking about taking a vacation to New Orleans-and you should, it's a truly fabulous place-why not do more than pump money into the economy? How about putting a house up, too? In fact, anywhere you're thinking about taking a vacation, there is probably a Habitat build to which you could donate some time (go here to search for builds in your area or where you're going).
