If you're an amateur naturalist (or just like taking pictures of animals), check out this new site called noah. It's a citizen science project that allows anyone with the noah iPhone app to upload images and locations of animals they see. The result, they hope, is a robust species list that works both as a field guide and a useful tool for science. They're in "beta" mode now and the data thin and a little messy, but it'll be an interesting project to watch. There are some similar projects out there already. If you're exclusively into birds, check out eBird, a bird-only site run by Audubon and the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. There's also Edward O. Wilson's Encyclopedia of Life, which also aims to be an exhaustive online catalog of life on earth but is less "citizen science" and more "scientist science" than noah.
