As you probably know, when you go to the grocery store, most of your non-luxury items are tax free. Your bread, and milk, and meat all comes without a tax. This is for the obvious reason that people absolutely need to buy food and it shouldn't be more expensive for them just so the government can make extra money. But that all may change in Phoenix in the next few months. In a fairly shocking decision, the Phoenix city government is going to begin levying a 2 percent tax on any food you buy. Buy a gallon of milk for you kids, there is 2 percent tax for the city of Phoenix. (People on food stamps are excepted. If you can just barely afford your groceries, though, you better have an extra 2 percent lying around.) Phoenix's mayor argues that while people need to eat, they also need basic services like police and firemen, and without closing gaps in the city's budget with a food tax, they wont be available. What do you think: Is a food tax reasonable or unacceptable?
