Yesterday, the illegal immigration debate landed smack in the middle of an elementary school classroom.
"But my mom doesn't have papers," asked a second grade to the First Lady, during a question-and-answer session at a Washington, D.C. school visit to promote exercise and healthy eating. By Michelle Obama's side was the first lady of Mexico, Margarita Zavala, who was in town for a state dinner later that night.
The seven-year-old student went on to ask why the president was "taking everybody away that doesn't have papers."
Michelle Obama responded by saying: "Yeah, well, that's something that we have to work on, right? To make sure that people can be here with the right kind of papers, right? That's exactly right."
Shortly after, hundreds of hateful comments flooded The Washington Post's website.
A spokeswoman for the school said the district would neither identify the student not does it ask students about the immigration status of their families: "There was a Supreme Court decision that makes it clear that if there's proof of residency in the county, then we educate the child."
With comprehensive immigration reform stalled for the near future, what do we tell our kids in the meantime?
