Teachers Are Awesome: Meet the 99-Year-Old Educator Still On the Job

Olivia Neubauer started teaching in 1935—77 years ago—and she's still going strong.

\n\n\n\nTeachers are known for their dedication, and there's no denying it can be a tough, often thankless job. Half of all teachers leave the profession within five years, which makes the story of Chicago educatorOlivia Neubauer all the more inspiring. Neubauer started teaching in 1935—77 years ago—and less than two weeks from her 100th birthday, she's still going strong in the classroom.

According to ABC7 Chicago, Neubauer—who began her career as a high school physical education teacher—now works as a reading teacher at Ashburn Lutheran School, the private school she helped start in 1964 on the city's southwest side.

Although Neubauer's days of teaching gym to 200-plus students at a time are over, she still arrives at work at 6 a.m. every day. For six hours every day, she works one-on-one or with small groups of Ashburn students, 99 percent of whom are black. As for retirement, the centenarian has no plans to stop teaching. "I just love it," she says.
