In the wake of the Newtown, Connecticut shootings, a chilling fashion trend has popped up: bulletproof clothing and accessories for children. Miguel Caballero, a Colombian business man who has been designing protective gear for politicians and security guards for over 20 years, launched the idea after what happened at Sandy Hook Elementary School.
After the shootings, Caballero and his company started getting orders from worried parents. So they designed a line for kids that includes t-shirts, vests, and backpacks to be sold in the U.S.
“We have received messages from all over the United States’ seeking the protective gear,” Giovanni Cordero, the company’s marketing director, told the
AP. “The products were created with the American market in mind, not for the Latino market. All the designs and colors, everything is thought out with them in mind.”
The collection is developed for kids aged 8 to 16, with prices ranging from $200 to $400. The company explains that the garments would not be for everyday use, just in case of emergencies for teachers to hand out.
Does it make anyone else as sad to read about this as it made me to write this? Do you agree with Caballero that there's a need for these garments, or would our efforts be better spent elsewhere?
