Some think that every tree has a soul. It's hard not to agree after a walk in the woods, surrounded by these beautifully imposing creatures that creak, sway and at times seem to talk to the world. One artist couple,
Zonenkinder, is toying with the physical manifestation of that notion by drawing faces on trees around the world, bringing them to life and revealing their personalities.
Zonenkinder, who often engages the natural world as a canvas, explains, "In the Tree Project we visualize the atmosphere of the moment, the usually hidden spirit and dreams of the trees, and the the living nature which surrounds us. By painting eyes, faces and grimaces on the trees, by ornamenting and dressing them we emphasize our close and unique connection with nature. Thereby reflecting that trees are exceptional and beautiful living individuals. This stands in contrast to the often destructive and indifferent interaction with the environment of mankind."
The German duo began their nature interventions in 2006 as an ongoing project, and have since gone all around Europe putting their creative touch on everything from trunks, stubs, and mossy branches. They emphasize that there is no damage done to the trees when making their works: "Please note that we take environmental issues serious: for all tree-paintings shown here we use natural and biodegradable colors that will fade away after a while." So we can rest assured knowing that the spirit of these trees will live on, long after the paint has faded.
