Without knowing the full story, I'm not going to pass judgment on the motivations of Bush administration officials for suppressing these images of the effects of climate change. But, as this article in the Guardian points out, the images-collected over the course of a decade by spy satellites-paint a chilling (reverse-pun intended!) picture of the true extent of the problem, and have increased scientific concern that there are not enough resources to accurately monitor the situation. This, naturally, has implications for coming up with a viable solution. (The images above show the retreating summer ice sheet in Barrow, Alaska.)
