Since the LA Times website already used a "dropped the ball" pun, we'll just cut to the chase: In an effort to protect the city's Ivanhoe and Elysian Reservoirs, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power is covering the water with 3 million black balls, thereby blocking the water from the sun, which prevents a certain carcinogen from developing. The pictures are fantastic.

If you live in the area, you should definitely take a look. And don't worry, you'll have about four years to do so.
