Game of Thrones fans were given another unexpected taste of The Winds of Winter this week when author George R.R. Martin posted an excerpt from the upcoming novel on his LiveJournal page. The released content from the highly anticipated sixth novel in the ‘A Song of Fire and Ice’ series follows Arianne Martell, a character not depicted in the HBO hit series Game of Thrones.
“We’ve changed the Winds of Winter sample on my website, replacing the Alayne chapter that’s been there for the past year with one featuring Arianne Martell,” Martin wrote. “You want to know what the Sand Snakes, Prince Doran, Areo Hotah, Ellaria Sand, Darkstar, and the rest will be up to in Winds of Winter? Quite a lot, actually. The sample will give you a taste. For the rest, you will need to wait.”
Martin clarified that changing the sample on his website is not an indication of the book’s completion. In a prior interview with IGN, Martin stated that he is still months away from finishing the novel. Meanwhile, season 6 of the television series aired on HBO on April 26 and has diverged from the written series’ storyline. "Look, I never thought the series could possibly catch up with the books, but it has," Martin explained. “Given where we are, inevitably, there will be certain plot twists and reveals in Season 6 of Game of Thrones that have not yet happened in the books.”
Don’t fret about spoilers too much, avid readers. Martin has indicated that the upcoming novel will feature a number of twists and turns not depicted on television. Martin previously hinted at a big twist in The Winds of Winter involving a character that is already dead on the show. “It’s something that involves a couple characters one of whom is dead in the show but not dead in the books. So the show can’t do this, unfortunately,” he said. The upcoming novel will also feature a number of characters who aren’t in the television series altogether.
