Yazmany Arboleda is a multimedia artist and the founder of Glassless Glasses Studio, an art activation collaborative space in New York City. Since 2008, Arboleda has creatively explored the ways in which media interacts with nature in defining contemporary standards of beauty. His installments often blur the lines between art, technology, and news to give viewers and participants a new way of framing and understanding reality.
This year he will approach his most ambitious art project yet: a public manifestation in the city of Kabul. As a continuation of his “
Monday Morning” series, Arboleda and hundreds of volunteers will distribute 10,000 biodegradable, hot pink balloons to Afghan citizens as they commute to work. Creating a vital bridge between the Afghan people and the rest of the world, this living sculpture will bring a moment of joy and wonder.
“We chose Kabul as the next destination for the Monday Morning series (after Bangalore in
India, Nairobi in
Kenya, and Yamaguchi in
Japan) because it has had more than its share of suffering, under the Soviets, the Taliban, and other corrupt leaders,” Arboleda says. “Afghanistan has been devastated economically, socially and culturally.”
A participatory campaign called "
We Believe in Balloons" is an additional component of this event unique to Kabul. The art piece will be financed by single dollar contributions from people from around the world, so that each single dollar will represent a direct link to one balloon — and equal ownership of the
overall manifestation.
“Ultimately, thousands of hand-to-hand exchanges will weave a living tapestry, creating a stream of shared instances of unexpected happiness,” Arboleda says.
