Even Stephen King thinks the presidential hopeful is terrifying
America’s literary braintrust wants you to know that it does not approve of Donald Trump, so much so that more than 450 authors were willing to co-sign an open letter posted to Lit Hub that explains why they oppose his candidacy.
Signatories including Stephen King, Junot Díaz, Rebecca Solnit, Jennifer Egan and literally hundreds more joined in to say, “We, the undersigned, as a matter of conscience, oppose, unequivocally, the candidacy of Donald J. Trump for the Presidency of the United States.”
The letter included a list of reasons for their objections, all laid out in a construction that starts with “Because...” (e.g. “Because, as writers, we are particularly aware of the many ways that language can be abused in the name of power.”) And it climaxed with this very appropriate grievance:
“Because the rise of a political candidate who deliberately appeals to the basest and most violent elements in society, who encourages aggression among his followers, shouts down opponents, intimidates dissenters, and denigrates women and minorities, demands, from each of us, an immediate and forceful response.”
Yep! That seems about right! You can read the rest of the letter on Lit Hub, where you can also find a link to add your own signature.
