We had some fun pouring through the first stimulus bill. Turns out, all that effort was wasted, as there is a new bill that has been reconciled with the bill passed by the Senate, that may or may not resemble the first one that the House passed. But no one knows, because there is no time to read it.Claiming correctly there is an economic emergency, the Democratic leadership is trying to ram the bill through ASAP, giving our representatives little to no time to read it-which is obnoxious and wrong. They don't need a huge delay, but give them a few days. I would very much like my elected officials to have read every word of the bill they're voting on. And since their job is to, you know, read bills and vote on them, it seems like it shouldn't take that long. But it will take some time, and that should be allowed. You can download the complete bill in two parts here and here (note the amusing handwritten markups throughout). Some conservative sites are claiming that the new PDFs are not searchable, so as to make it hard for the American public to find phrases like "the government will pay for millions of abortions! cackle cackle." But, either they've put new ones up, or the folks at "the headquarters of the conservative underground" are really bad with computers.
