Edie Littlefield Sundby spent six years of her life battling stage 4 gallbladder cancer. When doctors told her it had finally gone into remission, she started an 800-mile walk in California called El Camino Real. The route traces a path that connects 21 missions from San Diego to Sonoma.
"I walked to rid myself of the terror of cancer, and to overcome the fear of it coming back," she wrote in the New York Times. "It took hundreds of miles walking to just begin to rid my heart of six years of fear. That fear may never completely fade, but actively engaging life—whatever that may involve—reminds me of the joy each day can bring."
