The working class philosophy behind recording Nirvana’s final album

The talks began in 1992. The grunge band Nirvana was in the middle of capitalizing on their success with their 1991 albumNevermind and their smash hit Gen X anthem "Smells Like Teen Spirit." They were the hottest rock group of the 1990s and trendsetters of the grunge movement in music at the time. For the recording of their next album, they talked to various music producers including Steve Albini, a notorious and controversial punk rocker turned producer/music engineer.

Albini was eager to work with the band, but on his own terms. He wrote out a pitch letter that laid out his philosophy and preferences to ensure that he and the band would be able to work comfortably together. The letter from beginning to end was a manifesto allowing freedom of musical artistry over technical wizardry mixed in with working class values.

In 2024, eight-year-old English schoolgirl Georgia from Ipswich had enough. While shopping for her school uniform, she searched and searched through her local Sainsbury’s store for a pair of pants for the one simple feature boys’ pants had that girls’ pants lacked: pockets.

"They didn't have real pockets; they just had fake ones and then we went in the boys' and they had pockets and I thought it was unfair, so I bought boys' trousers," Georgia told the BBC. While she ultimately found pants she wanted in the boys’ section, she refused to do so without giving the store a piece of her mind.

Science says weight lifting pumps up protection against Alzheimer’s

As time goes by, more and more people are concerned about cognitive decline as they age. There are many supplements, brain-boosting foods, and mind-exercising games recommended to keep your brain active and healthy. However, a study done in January 2025 is showing something that helps your body can help keep your brain healthier, too: lifting weights.

The results of research at State University of Campinas (UNICAMP) in São Paulo, Brazil found that weight training and resistance exercise not only strengthens and builds up muscles in the body but prevents parts of the brain from atrophying, too. The scientists gathered 44 participants with mild cognitive impairment, a condition that indicates a higher risk of developing dementia and is a sign of possible Alzheimer’s disease in the future. After six months of weight training twice per week, the participants not only showed improvement in their memories and recall, but also showed protection against atrophy in the hippocampus and precuneus, the parts of the brain associated with Alzheimer’s disease.

In New York, a Brooklyn pasta shop keeps tradition alive with a 124-year-old fettuccine machine

“In the mid-1950s, 18th Avenue was lined with little family shops where, if you didn’t speak Italian, you weren’t Italian enough,” Andrew Zimmern said on a 2014 episode of Bizarre Foods in which Queen-Ann Ravioli and Macaroni was featured. The 18th Avenue he speaks of is in Brooklyn’s Bensonhurst neighborhood, once the home of the borough’s own Little Italy. Eleven years later, the beloved Brooklyn pasta shop is getting attention once again.

Queen-Ann Ravioli and Macaroni has been in residence since 1972, and in that time has been making its own pasta in the back of the store. Incidentally, the back of the store was once a Cammareri Brothers Bakery, a name you might recognize from the film Moonstruck–the same family owned bakeries in real life.

That's what happened to Mike O'Dell, a 50-year-old nurse anesthetist living in Oklahoma City. According to an interview with CNBC's writers Megan Sauer and Ryan Johnston, O'Dell sat down on his kitchen floor in 2018 with an idea. "He drew a Star Wars stormtrooper on a 5-by-6.5 sheet of graph paper, cut the pattern into smaller sections, and sewed fabric onto the paper. Then, he stitched the pieces together on a sewing machine and discarded the paper remnants."

In California, students with good grades can now automatically get into college

The college admissions process is famously stressful and expensive, with essays upon essays, tests upon tests, those fees, and then application fees—not to mention the time it all takes. But what if students could have it a little easier? A new initiative in California is asking that very question.

As part of a pilot program, students with high GPAs in California’s Riverside County can now be automatically admitted to 10 Cal State campuses based on their grades alone. According to San Francisco’s KQED, students just have to keep their grades up, take all the high school classes Cal State requires for admission, and fill out a form to hold their place at the campus of their choosing. Enrollment steps and tuition payments still apply, and students are still welcome to apply to any other universities they wish.

Canadian chemists perfect stirring stick that shields bar patrons from spiked drinks

One of the first things a person is taught when they start going to bars or clubs is to make sure you keep an eye on their drink at all times. Why? To make sure no one messes with it when you aren’t looking to drug you. After over ten years of conceptualization and testing, scientists at the University of British Columbia have developed a product that can make drinking out at bars much safer: a stirring stick that can detect whether cocktails have been spiked.

Spikeless looks like a regular stirring stick for drinks but can detect gamma-hydroxybutyric acid (GHB), ketamine, and other drugs typically used to spike drinks. In just 30 seconds, the stick’s chemical-coated bioplastic tip will change color if it detects drugs in the drink, alcoholic and non-alcoholic alike. This can prevent people from ingesting anything other than the promised alcohol.
