With national leaders up for election for nearly half of the world's population this year, 2014 will be a telling time for democracy. Of 50 democratic nations voting, 25 will be voting for a president, including the European Union. For Fiji, this year marks the country's first democratic elections since its president approved the new constitution last year. But some countries' political instability will make election seasons volatile. Turkey's incumbent prime minister faces corruption allegations, with elections coming up in August. And already, Bangladesh's election season provoked protests against the government, which led up to polling day on January 5.
